Solar Citizens comment on reports of Eraring extension

Comment from Solar Citizens acting CEO Joel Pringle on media reports of extension of Eraring:

“Solar Citizens believes the NSW Government will make the wrong choice in propping up and extending dirty coal power when renewables are the cheapest and cleaner source of new energy for the state and country.

“Action on climate change and greater support for rooftop solar and home batteries are effective ways of lowering energy bills to deliver cost of living relief. It’s quite bizarre that Premier Chris Minns is doing the opposite.

“Why is the NSW Government pushing the cost of keeping the Eraring Power Plant open onto people’s electricity bills during a cost-of-living crisis and ignoring the large body of evidence that any supply gap can be met with renewable energy projects backed by storage?

“This would be a bad decision and, if true, Solar Citizens says never again. We’re asking the NSW Government to legislate for no further extensions for any existing NSW coal-fired power facilities beyond their agreed license for polluting power production.

“Solar Citizens is also calling for the upcoming State Budget to include a substantial investment in a fast, mass roll-out of consumer renewable energy resources and energy efficiency to help bring energy bills down and provide cheaper, cleaner energy for NSW."
