Solar Citizens welcome New Vehicle Efficiency Standard delivering cleaner, cheaper vehicles for Australians

Solar Citizens welcomes the passing of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard legislation today with more affordable electric vehicles, and more efficient fuel vehicles, set to enter the Australian market.

Solar Citizens CEO Heidi Lee Douglas said, “The passing of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard today is a significant acceleration towards cheaper, cleaner vehicles and getting Australians behind the wheel of cars that run on sunshine.

“The new efficiency standard is a testament to the hard work of Solar Citizens, civil society groups, and organisations and community members who love electric vehicles and want climate action.

“The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard will return money to household budgets, ease the cost of living for drivers, and reduce carbon pollution for decades to come.

“The new efficiency standard clears the road for more efficient, cheaper-to-run vehicles in the Australian market, including more efficient petrol models, electric vehicles, and hybrids.

“This new standard will reduce fuel costs for the average driver by about $1000 per vehicle per year. If you charge up your electric vehicle from your own rooftop solar, you can run your car on sunshine and further reduce fuel costs to near nil.

“Affordable electric vehicles combined with electric vehicle-to-grid technologies will also make cars ‘batteries on wheels’, and provide further savings to Australian households as we run our cars and homes on sunshine,” Ms Douglas said.
