The Federal Coalition recently announced it is backing nuclear to power Australia's energy future. This ignores the evidence that solar and renewables are the cheapest and cleanest forms of new energy for our country.
Nuclear power plants running continuously, as promised by the Coalition's nuclear manifesto, are incompatible with a future energy grid with high levels of rooftop solar. Even if the nuclear plants are eventually built they will lead to a future where rooftop solar systems are being shut off and curtailed to free up capacity in the energy grid when the sun is shining and solar PV outcompetes nuclear on price.
The leader of the Opposition, Peter Dutton, has set the terms of the fight he wants to have against our renewable energy transition. We need to get in front of this debate and make the case for cheaper energy bills through rooftop solar and household batteries as the centrepiece of our future energy grid instead.
