Australia is a rooftop solar success story, leading the world with rooftop solar on over four million homes.
But over half of Australians don’t have access to cheap, clean energy - including the 33% of people who live in apartments and rentals.
Plus, Aussie homes are infamous for being about as energy efficient as a tent!
We call on Federal, State and Territory Governments to double down on the success of rooftop solar and take these three urgent actions to remove barriers for locked out households - including the seven million people who rent:
🔑 “More solar roofs”
Introduce incentives to install solar on rental properties, with renter protections in place to ensure the cost of living benefits flow to tenants.
⛺“Do you live in a glorified tent?!”
Roll out Minimum Energy Efficiency or Performance Standards for rental homes with mandatory disclosure as soon as possible, to make our homes more liveable and affordable to heat, cool and cook in.
💗“Sharing is caring”
Establish Urban Renewable Energy Zones and introduce policies to unlock solar on big roofs (like factories and warehouses) to share the benefits of clean, cheap energy with renters and apartment residents and make our towns and cities more energy self-sufficient.
We're calling on governments to give all locked out households the keys to cleaner, cheaper energy through:
- Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for rentals
- Solar for Renters policies and incentives
- Urban Renewable Energy Zones
