Renewables are the pathway to cheaper energy

Solar Citizens is extremely concerned that the Liberal Party has decided to follow the National Party and walk away from a commitment to Net Zero by 2050; and calls out their misleading messaging about energy costs.

Solar Citizens CEO Heidi Lee Douglas said from Belem, Brazil, where she is attending the international climate conference COP30:

“While the world is coming together this week in Belem to continue to turboboost a Net Zero economy, the Australia’s Liberal and National parties have put themselves in the dark - turning their back on community safety, on good governance, and on lower energy bills”.

“Abandoning Net Zero won’t cut power bills — it will send them soaring. The biggest driver of high prices is our reliance on ageing coal and costly gas, not renewables.

“Both the Climate Change Authority and Australian Energy Market Operator confirm that it is coal and gas that are driving up energy prices and that more renewables will mean lower costs for households and businesses.

“The International Energy Agency said just this week that countries sticking to the Net Zero pathway will enjoy cheaper electricity within a decade.(1)

“Households with rooftop solar and batteries pay the least for power — that’s the best path to energy security and affordability, and reducing carbon emissions. Without renewables, energy prices would be up to 50 per cent higher today (according to Griffith University research). (2)

“The evidence is crystal clear: clean energy is already saving Australians money. It's why rooftop solar is the highest per capita in the world in Australia. Aussie’s love rooftop solar across the political divide.”

“Constituents in Liberal and National Party seats  are already backing rooftop solar and batteries to bring down their energy bills.

“Sixteen electorates with postcodes with the highest battery uptake and twenty two electorates with higher than 45% uptake of rooftop solar are Liberal, LNP or National seats, It’s particularly of note that six of the highest battery uptake electorates also have more than 60% solar uptake - which is twice the national average (30%) - the Queensland LNP seats of Fisher, Wright, Bowman, Longman, Pearce and WA Liberal seat of Canning.” (3)

“Our message to the Federal Liberal and National parties is that turning away from Net Zero is turning away from lower bills.”
