New Vehicle Efficiency Standard will put Aussies in driver’s seat for cost-of-living and emissions savings: Solar Citizens

Solar Citizens has welcomed the release of the Federal Government’s proposed modelling for a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard that delivers cost-of-living and health benefits.

The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) requires vehicle manufacturers to meet pollution emissions targets each year. Most countries worldwide already have a standard in place, making Australia a dumping ground for less efficient vehicles that are more expensive to run.

Government analysis found a strong NVES can save:

  • About $1000 per vehicle per year or $17,000 over the average life of the vehicle;

  • Australian motorists about $100 billion in fuel costs to 2050;

  • About $5 billion in reduced health costs given the reduction in air pollution.

Heidi Lee Douglas, CEO of Solar Citizens said, “Stronger vehicle emission standards will be a driving force for cleaner, cheaper passenger and light vehicle transport in Australia.

“The Federal Government’s analysis shows a fuel emission standard that matches U.S. standards can save Australians up to $100 billion on fuel costs alone by 2050, easing cost-of-living pressure for drivers, returning money to household budgets, and reducing pollution.

“Electric vehicle sales hit record numbers last year and more Australians want to get behind the wheel of cheaper to run, more fuel-efficient vehicles - but cost remains a barrier.

“This new standard will provide more choices of both electric and more efficient fuel-efficient vehicle models, including more affordable electric vehicle options.

“Australia also has the highest uptake of rooftop solar in the world, and tying home solar to electric vehicles means we can run our cars on sunshine. Goodbye fuel bills, and good riddance”, Ms Douglas said.
