Solar Potential of NSW Housing Stock
Our latest report found that there is 650MW of rooftop solar potential within the social and community housing sector of New South Wales. This clean energy capacity has the potential to create hundreds of jobs, save 150,000 households an average of $860 a year, and provide $127 million annually in bill savings, while offsetting 10.6 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over 20 years.
This report was produced by researchers in the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering at UNSW Sydney for the Australian PV Institue and Solar Citizens.

Send a message to the NSW Premier
The NSW Government is deciding whether to prop up the ageing Eraring coal-fired power station – at a cost of up to $400 million each year.
Will you tell the NSW Premier to abandon these plans and instead invest in clean, cheap renewable energy to lower household bills?
Solar Citizens Statement on the Voice to Parliament
Want to learn more about the Voice to Parliament? Check out our disinformation-busting webinar here.
Solar Citizens supports a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament Referendum.
Australia is still one of just a few remaining nations with a colonial history that doesn't recognise its first peoples in its Constitution.
The Federal Government outlines the purpose of the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice 2023 as follows:
“...amend the Constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia, establish an advisory body known as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice (the Voice), and provide that the Voice may make representations to Parliament and the Executive on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and give Parliament the power to pass legislation with respect to matters related to the Voice.” [1]
The Voice was recommended after a years-long engagement with First Nations communities across Australia, and has been carefully devised and given the green light by legal experts.
This Referendum is an opportunity for all Australians to come together and honour and celebrate the rights, history and ongoing relationship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with this land. After at least 65,000 years of continuous culture, a Voice will recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our 122-year-old constitution.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people know and understand the best way to deliver real and practical change in their communities. A Voice will enable First Nations people to have a direct line of communication to Parliament to have a say on the issues, laws, and policies that directly affect their families and communities. It will help ensure that real community voices are heard and resources are used effectively to achieve real results.
Solar Citizens acknowledges the long-standing and continuing leadership of First Nations Peoples in caring for and protecting Country, and championing a fairer and safer future for all Australians.
A ‘Yes’ vote is a first step towards acknowledging that leadership in our Constitution, so we can better learn from and work with First Nations communities and make decisions that affect our energy system, environment, and shared future, together.
The Referendum is a once in a generation opportunity – and voting ‘Yes’ is a simple step we can take to help shape a sunnier, fairer future for all of us.

Affordable Home Storage to Bring Down Bills
Coal and gas are sending power prices soaring. The good news is: Aussies are experts at cheap homegrown power and—with the right government policy mechanisms—we can quickly build on our solar success right now by rolling out affordable home batteries.
We’ve heard directly from MPs we’ve met with that they need hard data showing home storage is a cost-effective solution.
Australia’s energy ministers are meeting this November to talk about household solar and storage. Now is our moment to act.
Can you chip in to a hard-hitting battery research project and media blitz to back energy ministers to support household storage?

Solar Citizens Partnerships to Help You Switch and Save
Everyday Aussies are leading the renewable revolution to cut bills, take energy generation back into our own hands, and create a healthier, better life for everyone. We know that we can bring down the cost of living and emissions with clean energy solutions.
That's why we have partnered up with clean technology service providers to help you make the switch and electrify your home.
It’s a win-win. You get access to great deals and help us fuel our people-powered clean energy and transport campaigns, as we gain a small commission from each provider! By taking part, we can also gather valuable stories and hard data on how clean energy solutions are helping Australians. If you opt-in to be a case study for us, we can use your experience and savings to show politicians the benefits and barriers to clean energy, clean transport and electrification – and help win policies that allow more Australians to access these benefits.
You can read more about what each organisation offers and why we have partnered with them below:
If you have any questions about these offers, please email us at [email protected]
*Please note: Solar Citizens has done due diligence on each of these organisations to ensure that the service is of a high quality, but they might not be suitable for everyone depending on your individual circumstances.

End of Financial Year 2023 - Solar For All
Australia is the sunny country – we have abundant and dirt cheap solar shining down on us. So it’s unbelievable that any Australian should have to worry about whether they can afford to put the heater on when it's freezing cold!
We urgently need more cheap rooftop solar to bring down power bills and electrify our grid – but millions are still locked out. That’s why our people-powered campaign is going in hard to bat for people who are locked out of cheap solar—yet often need it most— like those living in rentals, strata, apartments and social homes. We have the whole campaign planned out – but to get it off the ground we need your help.
Can you make a tax-deductible donation to our End of Financial Year Appeal to power a hard-hitting campaign that builds up solar champions and smashes solar barriers?
End of Financial Year Appeal 2023
Australia is still in the slow lane on affordable clean transport and it's costing us dearly. Now the petrol car lobby is trying to delay and weaken the roll out of a Fuel Efficiency Standard—the key policy needed to unlock affordable electric vehicles (EVs)—using tactics straight out of the fossil fuel lobby’s handbook.
This is our last chance to make a lasting impression and help neutralise EV opponents before the Federal Government makes the final decision on a Standard later this year. We need both sides of politics to see support in the regions and cities alike and ensure the petrol car lobby doesn't whip up a media frenzy to roadblock a strong Standard.
Together, we’ve gotten Fuel Efficiency Standards to the top of the political agenda. But we need to act now to get a strong Standard across the line – or risk Australia becoming a dumping ground for polluting vehicles.
Please donate to the End of Financial Year Appeal to power the fight for a clean transport future.
