Solar Citizens launches QLD 9-point plan

We need a race-to-the-top on solar and renewables in State election

Solar Citizens has launched a 9-point solar plan to save half a million Queensland households about $1,700 per year on their energy bills.

The plan to deliver an additional 500,000 rooftop solar installations and 200,000 household batteries focuses on the two-thirds of Queensland households that are currently locked out of the rooftop solar revolution.

Solar Citizens is calling for bipartisan commitment for the following clean energy policies:

  1. Solar for Rentals

  2. Ongoing support for household batteries

  3. Rooftop solar and sustainability infrastructure in strata-titled properties

  4. Electric vehicle charging-ready apartment buildings

  5. Solar and virtual power plants for social housing

  6. Energy upgrades for social housing

  7. Energy Efficiency Assessments for low-Income households

  8. Urban Industrial Renewable Energy Zones (SREZ)

  9. Queensland’s own Household Energy Systems Strategy

Heidi Lee Douglas, CEO Solar Citizens said, ”Solar Citizens is asking Queensland state election candidates to adopt this 9- Point Plan to save half a million Queenslanders $1,700 per year for the next 20 years.

“Queenslanders are the world leaders in home solar, with more than a million homes in QLD with solar, but many Queenslanders are still locked out because of where they live.

“That simply isn't fair and our next QLD government can and must fix this.

“Queenslanders living in rentals, strata and social housing have a right to cheap clean energy too. The policy fixes are here and we want all candidates to commit to our 9 Point Plan to deliver Solar for All Queenslanders.”

Ms Douglas said cost of living is top of mind for Queenslanders heading to the state polls, and solar and energy efficiency are bill-busting solutions for households and climate pollution.

“Imagine the bright future for Queensland if we no longer worried about energy bills,” she said.

“Queenslanders are world leaders in voting with their rooftops for solar energy. We need political leaders who can invest in ensuring everyone can share in the benefits of solar and renewables.

“Rooftop solar teamed with battery storage reduces energy bills, is good for Queensland home budgets, delivers energy independence, and generates less carbon pollution.

“We want every Queenslander, regardless of their postcode or personal circumstances, to have support so they can access cheap solar energy and improve energy efficiency, and enjoy bill relief.

“Top of the list should be community members currently locked out of the benefits of cheaper, cleaner energy including renters, people living in apartments or social housing and people on low incomes or with low savings.

“We have the technologies available today to create solar energy on every rooftop possible, store excess solar and power up our communities and economy on this clean, cheap energy.

“The upcoming Queensland election is time for the policy commitments to empower all Queenslander with cheaper energy bills from homegrown clean energy,” Ms Douglas said.
