Stop the Sun Tax - Solar Citizens

Stop the Sun Tax

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has introduced new rules that will allow solar owners to be charged for exporting their clean energy to the grid – in effect, taxing the sun. Thanks to the hard work of close to 20,000 solar citizens, the final rules for export charging include many more protections for solar households.

However, as each state and territory in the National Energy Market rolls out plans for export charging in the coming years, we must keep fighting to ensure that solar homes and businesses get a fair deal and that governments prioritise measures to help everyone access the benefits of cheap, clean solar.

You can find more information about the sun tax here.

We're calling on State Premiers and Energy Ministers to oppose unfair export charges and stand up for the future of solar. Sign the petition.

Will you sign?

Dear State Premiers and Energy Ministers,

The Australian Energy Market Commission has ruled that solar owners can now be charged to export to the grid – in effect, taxing the sun.

Research shows solar owners are producing cheap power for their neighbours and reducing bills in the process. We should be encouraging more households to make the solar switch, not penalising those who have made a smart investment in clean technology.

We're asking you to block unfair export charges and instead:

  • Invest in network infrastructure, like community-scale battery storage, so that more homes can invest in rooftop solar.
  • Help more renters, people living in apartments and low-income households access cheap solar energy.
